Yule or the Winter Solstice will occur on December 21st 2013 and bring with it the longest night of the year. From now until the Summer Solstice (June 21), daylight hours will increase.
On the Wiccan Wheel of the Year, traditional magick spells and rituals honour the Oak King, who represents the return of longer days as he vanquishes the ancient Holly King, who represents the longer nights. During our spell work, we will re-enact this battle symbolically, using a black candle for the Holly King and a gold candle for the Oak King.
