Wiccan Handfasting at Spring Equinox

Are you planning a Wiccan wedding or handfasting at the Spring Equinox? Though there are no strict rules to follow, you might want to add some traditional correspondences to your special day.

Roses, ivy, yarrow, vervain, broom and rosemary are customary floral choices.  You can use seasonal flowers like daffodil, jonquil and violets in bouquets, corsages and boutonnieres. Pots of spring bulbs and dogwood stems make charming table decorations.

Create a palette of pastel colours, like mauve, pale green, soft yellow and light blue. Use lavender incense.

Start the celebration with a glass of rosé wine and steamed asparagus with lemon butter, then serve asparagus with lemon butter, lamb and barley stew and the wedding cake of your choice.  Change the stew to a vegetarian option by substituting potatoes for the lamb.

Many brides are now forgoing white gowns.  The Spring Equinox is an ideal time to wear more flattering pastels colours, such as pale pink or soft peach.

Blessed be!

Temazcal Mayan Sweat Lodge in Mexico

During a recent trip to the Mayan Riviera I was able to participate in an authentic Mayan temazcal.  I had been searching for inspiration and physical healing, hence my vacation to Mexico.  I hoped that walking on the beach, swimming in the ocean and eating fresh, simple foods would be sufficient to generate a feeling of renewal but more was needed.

I met a very interesting, spiritual woman at a yoga class who asked if I planned to attend the temazcal later in the week.  I hadn’t even known that one was available! I soon realized that the Universe was working to meet my request.

It was truly amazing on many levels  – the physical heat of the steaming volcanic rocks, the emotional impact of chanting and singing and the spiritual afterglow.  It was a moment I will always remember.

Before the ceremony, the Shaman greeted the four directions, just as Wiccans do when we cast our circle. Six of us participated and I was honoured when he asked me to hold the goblet and act as priestess.

Inside, the dome was extremely hot and totally dark, as the water extinguished any light from the burning volcanic rocks. During the ceremony, the Shaman brought us through the four seasons, relating each to a stage in our lives. Thankfully, after each season, the blankets were removed from the door so we could have a break from the intense steamy heat. At the end, we were “baptized” with a herbal infusion.

The entire ritual was an incredible experience for me and for the others who attended.

Full Snow Moon Rituals February 25, 2013

The full moon on February 25, 2013 is called Snow Moon, Ice Moon or Wild Moon. It’s a full earth moon in Virgo, opposite to the sun sign Pisces. This is an ideal time to perform rituals that purify the mind, body and soul. Letting go of
negative vibrations and replacing them with positive energy is an ongoing
process, especially during months when the days are shorter and everyday issues
seem more worrisome.

In winter, we often spend additional time indoors, so residual toxicity can be
persistent. My book Simple Wiccan Magick Spells for Everyday contains a ritual to cleanse and bless the home, so we will use this full moon to reduce any noxious vibrations within ourselves.

February Full Moon Correspondences

Set your altar and tabletop with violets and primroses. February stones are
amethyst and rock crystal. Use a blue candle and sage for your purification
ritual. You may wish to prepare a philtre for your bath or talisman. If so, use
angelica, jasmine and vervain to cleanse and protect.

Full Moon Recipes

After your spellwork, enjoy a feast of baby spinach salad with toasted pine nuts
& balsamic vinaigrette, asparagus risotto and cinnamon-ginger cupcakes.

You will find recipes for this menu as well as a full ritual if you need one, in my
eBook Simple Wiccan Magick Full Moon Spells & Rituals.

Imbolc or Candlemas Spells & Rituals February 1, 2013

Imbolc or Candlemas is the feast of the waxing light and a traditional time for Wiccan initiation.  To honour the Celtic Fire Goddess Brigit (also known as Bride and Brid), in her maiden aspect, we wear white robes and light many white candles.

Correspondences for Imbolc

Flowers are primrose, snowdrops and any others with white blossoms. Candles and colours are aqua, white or silver. Incense is sandalwood and stones are crystal, amethyst and rose quartz.

One of the dominant themes for February is “energy flowing beneath the surface,” which can take on many symbolic meanings. If you need inspiration for your own Imbolc ritual, my Wheel of the Year Guide has a potent spell designed to help identify any blocked energy – love, creativity, etc. you may be experiencing and to free it for your personal use. Recipes are also included for a seasonal feast.

Full Wolf Moon in Leo Spells January 27, 2013

The full moon in Leo on January 27, 2013 is known as Wolf Moon, Quiet Moon or Chaste Moon. Correspondences for January are carnation and snowdrop flowers; stones are garnet and jet. Use lavender oil and incense during ritual.

A full moon in Leo is an ideal time for spells and rituals to boost your good fortune and shoot for the stars. Nothing happens without believing it will, so stroke your ego and think about what makes you special. Put yourself in the centre of the action and watch as the world revolves around you.

If you need more inspiration, my book Simple Wiccan Magick Full Moon Spells & Rituals has a spell for building bigger dreams. So many times we deny what we really want, simply because we cannot imagine it happening, so this spell helps you to dream big.

Simple Wiccan New Year’s Ritual

Although Samhain on October 31st is the Witches’ New Year, many Neo-Pagans like to celebrate the “other” New Years Eve as well on December 31st. And why not?  It’s another opportunity for us to jump-start any projects and make new resolutions.

If you followed the ritual for Samhain in my Wheel of the Year eBook Simple Wiccan Magick Spells and Ritual Ceremony, you created a touch stone, painted it in your favourite power colour and marked the year on it. You’ve been using it as a daily reminder to focus on your most important goals.

If not, you can do this now. Cleanse it and charge it and place it in a prominent spot.

New Year’s Day is a wonderful time for cleansing and blessing your home and work space.  A easy way to do this is to walk a stick of sage incense through every room, saying, “Goddess cleanse this space and fill it with grace.”

Blessed be and enjoy your second New Years’ celebrations!

November 28, 2012 Full Moon Spells & Lunar Eclipse

The full moon on November 28 is known as Beaver Moon, Dark Moon or Fog Moon. Popular Wiccan spells for this full moon in Gemini relate to communications.  It’s a good opportunity to contact others or clear up misunderstandings through letter writing, phone calls or face-to-face meetings. It’s also an ideal time for travel.

November 28, 2012 Lunar Eclipse Viewing

A lunar eclipse will also occur on November 28, visible to observers in western Canada and the United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand and much of Asia. Those in eastern Canada and USA will be unable to see the eclipse as it starts after the moon sets.

Stones associated with the month of November are yellow topaz and citrine and traditional flowers are chrysanthemums.

Wiccan Full Moon in Gemini Spell

In my eBook Simple Wiccan Magick Full Moon Spells and Rituals, you will find a spell for better communications, using jasmine oil and incense for your altar and a blue candle during ritual. You can also create your own spell, following the instructions in my Samhain posts during October 2012.

Cast Your Samhain Spell October 31, 2012

You are now ready to cast a personalized witchcraft spell for Samhain using the information in my last four posts.

First, you found the heart of your desire – in our example, to receive a work promotion. Then you wrote a memorable affirmation in positive and present terms. The third step was to select the correspondences that suited your desire; in our case, lavender oil, sage incense, a gold candle and talisman cloth and a turquoise stone. Then you wrote a compelling visualization – seeing yourself in your new job and feeling happy and grateful for your blessings.

Now, set up your altar as usual with these required elements and cast your spell as usual, but instead of using someone else’s words and correspondences, you will insert your own.

You now know how to create your own witchcraft spell.  It’s not as complicated as you might think, but it’s not as difficult either.  It takes thought, energy and research but now you are able to focus your intent and manifest your desire.

Taurus Full Moon Rituals October 29, 2012

The October full moon is known as Hunter’s Moon. It is also called Falling Leaf Moon and Blood Moon. As the 2012 October full moon falls on the 29th, it is in the sun sign Taurus. A full moon in Taurus is an ideal time to cast spells promoting creativity, prosperity, better family relationships and practical planning.

In my eBook Simple Wiccan Magick Full Moon Spells & Rituals, I show you how to create an Abundance Amulet, a round disk full of prosperity-drawing herbes. The ritual focuses on family happiness and a life of abundance.

October Correspondences for Spells

Stones associated with October are morganite, pink emerald, opals and tourmaline. Decorate your altar with calendula and marigold flowers and use lavender oil and incense.

As the Wiccan festival of Samhain, the Witches’ New Year falls two days after the full moon, you may wish to reuse your altar flowers.

Hunter Moon Menu Suggestions

After your spellwork, feast on a vegetarian three-bean chilli, made with the usual spices but with kidney beans, chick peas and black beans – an ironic twist for the Hunter Moon! Add a mixed green salad with earthy balsamic vinaigrette and a fresh fig claufouti for dessert. Recipes are included in my full moon eBook.

Create Your Samhain Spell Visualization

In my last three posts, I went through the steps involved to create your own Wiccan magick spell for Samhain. You found the heart of your desire, wrote a memorable affirmation and researched the appropriate correspondences. Now, you will create a compelling visualization.

Use Correspondences to Channel Your Vision

Take the appropriate correspondences you selected; in our example, that would be lavender oil or flowers, sage incense, blossoms or leaves and a turquoise stone.  Place them on a 9” x 9” square cloth.  You could use orange or black to represent Samhain or gold to represent your wish of a job promotion.

Take these items, your Book of Shadows, (or paper), and a pen and find a quiet space to contemplate your intent.  If you wish, you can light the incense and play some music. Hold the cloth with the flowers and stones and recite your affirmation a few times and start to visualize your desire.

See Yourself as You Would Like To Be

In our example, you would picture yourself in the present enjoying your new promotion.  Imagine that you are watching a movie and you are the star. See yourself smiling and interacting with your fellow employees. Hear their voices as they speak to you. What does your new office look like? Is there a congratulatory bouquet of flowers on your desk? What is its fragrance? What are you wearing?  Feel the fine fabric of your new clothes, or the comfort and style of your new shoes.

Choose the Most Powerful Images for Your Spell

Be sure that the images are large, bright and colourful. Continue in this manner until you have a complete picture of your successful promotion.  Feel happy, feel proud and feel joyous.

Now, write the highlights of this experience in your Book of Shadows.  Write it in the present tense and include all the important sights, sounds, smells, feelings and colourful pictures. When you read this aloud during ritual, you should be able to transport yourself into that space as though it were reality.

In my next post, we will combine all these elements to create your personalized Samhain spell.

Find Your Samhain Spell Correspondences

In my last 2 posts about how to write your own Wiccan magick spell for Samhain, I showed you how to find the heart of your desire and write an affirmation that best expresses it. Now that you have found the qualities you need to reach your goal, we can search for the correspondences that best suit it.

How Correspondences Work in Your Spell

Correspondences are items like stones, candles, colours and incense etc. that best match or correspond to the energies you wish to create.  When you use these items in your spellwork, you increase the intensity of your vibration. In my eBook Simple Wiccan Magick Talismans and Witches’ Tools, I list the Seven Best Herbes for Wiccan Magick. I’m going to draw from this list to make it easy, but you can also research other books.  A wonderfully informative guide is The Master Book of Herbalism by Paul Beyerl. I highly recommend it!

Let’s suppose you feel you need more energy, good health and mental strength to achieve your goal of a promotion, which will in turn bring more money. Angelica is a good herbe to draw in positive energies, which manifest as increased good fortune. Frankincense will help achieve success in both the physical and spiritual domains.

Lavender draws love, money, success and good energy. As lavender is also one of the herbes I recommend for Samhain in my Wheel of the Year guide Simple Wiccan Magick Spells and Ritual Ceremony, this is a must-have. I also use Sage at Samhain and it is good for increasing mental and physical strength.

So, you could use any or all of these herbes in your spell, as oil, incense, in your philtre or as decorative flowers on your altar. I would use Lavender oil, sage incense and lavender, sage and mums as altar flowers.

How to Choose Candle Colours for Your Spell

Even though this is a spell for work promotion, you will be performing it at Samhain, so it is essential to add some of that festival’s correspondences in order to draw more energy. Black, orange, copper or gold candles are recommended. I would choose a gold candle to symbolise the promotion.

How to Choose Ritual Stones

Regular Samhain stones are smoky quartz, opal, Apache tears and black obsidian. After consulting the chapter Ten Best Stones for Wiccan Magick in my eBook Simple Wiccan Magick Talismans and Witches’ Tools, I would choose Turquoise for its vibrations of good health, wealth and success.

Gather these correspondences and have them at your side. My next post will show you how to use them to help write an important part of the ritual – an inspiring visualization.

How to Write a Samhain Spell Affirmation

In my last post, I asked you to dig below the surface to discover the heart of the desire you wish to manifest at Samhain. An example I gave was you might think you want a new job, but in reality, you want a promotion, or more responsibility or more money.

Let’s suppose that you have refined your desire to a promotion at your current place of employment. Now, you can create an affirmation, a few lines to describe your goal.  Write it as a positive statement and write it in the present tense. For example, you might write, “I am so happy and grateful for my job promotion to manager.  Every day my skills at my new job are improving, earning me financial rewards and acknowledgement. So mote it be.”  Instead of writing, “I hope to get out of my old job and into something better in the future.”

You can write your affirmation in rhyme if you like or just as a simple sentence or two, as above. Fine-tune it until you feel it aptly expresses your goal. Keep it simple so you can recite it daily from memory until the results are manifest. Remember to express gratitude as part of your affirmation.

The next step to create your own spell is to examine the qualities you need to attract in order to manifest this outcome.  Will you need courage? Stamina? Help from friends?  Financial aid to take courses? Think about this for a while and make notes on paper or in your Book of Shadows. In my next post, I’ll tell you how to select herbes, stones, candles and flowers that best correspond to these qualities.

Write Your Samhain Wiccan Magick Spell

How would you like to write your own Wiccan magick spell? October 31st is the Witches’ New Year, so it’s an ideal opportunity to make resolutions and start new habits.

It’s easy to create your own ritual and I’ll show you how over the next few weeks. You will then have a personalized spell ready for the next festival on the Wheel of the Year.

How to Write Your Spell

First, you must start with a desire.  What do you really want? You must dig deep into your unconscious to find the truth of this question. For example, you might think you want to find a new job, but in reality, you’re happy in your work; you’d really like a promotion or more responsibility. Or the position is fine, but some of your colleagues are annoying. Maybe you’d prefer to work with different people. Maybe you just want to make more money.

Over the next few days, spend some time thinking about it. Notice any images or visualizations that pop into your head. Get a pen and paper, (do not use your computer), or use your Book of Shadows and write it all out. Be as specific as you can.

In my next post, I’ll show you how to write an memorable affirmation that best expresses your desires.

Wiccan Altar Blessing Ritual

The days leading up to a full or waxing moon are an ideal time to cleanse, charge and bless your altar and witches’ tools. This week is a particularly magickal time to do so, as a blue moon is on its way August 31st.

Traditional herbes for a Wiccan altar blessing ritual are vervain for oil and incense; fennel and flax. Basil can also be used, either in water for cleansing or as a bouquet on the altar.

Bring a small bowl of water and sea salt or basil into your sacred space before you close the circle.  After you have summoned the Goddess and the four elements, sprinkle the salt water around the altar and over your tools, saying, Goddess, cleanse this space and bad energy erase.

Then, raise your blade to touch your altar and tools, saying, Goddess, charge this space and fill it will grace.

Hold the blessing stone and/or herbes you have chosen in your dominant hand and say, Goddess, bless this space, let the magick take place. So mote it be. Then, place the stones and herbes back onto the altar.

Continue with your ritual spellwork as usual.  Remember that your intent is the most important part of the ceremony and to give thanks for all your blessings before opening the circle.

Spells for Full Blue Moon August 31st 2012

In August 2012, there will be two full moons. The second one falls on August 31st. Though some sources declare that a blue moon is the second full moon in a month, the Farmers’ Almanac definition of a blue moon is the third full moon in a season with four full moons. As each season normally has only three full moons with specific names for each, such as Harvest Moon, Rose Moon or Wolf Moon, an additional full moon could cause confusion, so the third one is called blue.

Others believe a true blue moon only happens once every three or four years, when a full moon occurs twice within the same astrological sign.

While some sources consider the August 31st full moon a blue moon, this suits neither the Farmers’ Almanac definition nor those who say both moons must fall within the same zodiac sign.

Pisces Full Blue Moon Spell for Clairvoyant Powers

Regardless of what you believe, the August 31st full moon is an ideal time for potent spellmaking.  When you are celebrating the blue moon, you may follow the appropriate ritual of the zodiac sign opposite the one in play.  For example, the August 31st full blue moon in sun sign Virgo is a Pisces full water moon. This is an ideal time for spells and rituals to increase your clairvoyant powers and to tell fortunes and interpret dreams.   Continue reading

August 2, 2012 Full Moon in Aquarius

The August 2 full moon in Aquarius is an ideal time for networking, resolving disputes and using personal power for the greater good.

This full moon is also called Corn Moon, Barley Moon or Sturgeon Moon. Corresponding flowers are gladiolas, poppies and sunflowers; stones are sardonyx, peridot and cat’s eye.

Set your altar with the above flowers and stones and use jasmine insence and oil.  If you wish, you may reuse your August 1st Lammas altar set up, which also calls for gladiolas and sunflowers.

Charge your Witches’ Tools

The close proximity of a Wheel of the Year festival to the full moon will create super energy and powerful vibrations to help manifest magick. It’s also an ideal time to cleanse and charge your tools and herbes.

Seasonal Full Moon Recipes

Suggested seasonal recipes for your full moon feast include Basil, Spinach, Red Pepper & Pepperoni Pizza, followed by Peach Clafouti. These recipes and complete full moon rituals are available in my eBook Simple Wiccan Magick Spells and Full Moon Rituals.

A second full moon in August 2012 occurs on August 31 in sun sign Virgo, placing the full blue moon in Pisces.
